with Apio Inc.
In 1999, Turbana Corporation and Apio,
Inc., Guadalupe, California, formed a strategic alliance to
market bananas and plantains in the United States.
Apio markets a full line of vegetables,
value added vegetables, grapes and tree fruit under the Eat
Smart brand. The company is recognized for their innovation
in packaging technology applications and for adding value
to their products.
Under the agreement, Unibán packs
a full line of bananas and specialty bananas from selected
farms under Apio's Eat Smart brand. For Turbana, the
alliance creates an opportunity to increase value for
Unibán's growers. For Apio, bananas represent
an expansion of the product line which will further
allow them to build strength and awareness in a powerful
category with their Eat Smart brand.

New technologies
To develop optimum packaging solutions
to our customers, Turbana has partnered with Landec Corporation,
a materials company that specializes in manufacture of temperature-activated
polymer products. Landec's patent-protected Intelimer polymers
are developed for a wide variety of products notably with
applications in food packaging and agriculture.
Our goals with the new packaging:
- Prolong freshness and shelf life of
bananas and plantains.
- Maximize quality by delivering color,
taste and flavor the consumer demands.
- Increase potential for distributing
higher dollar value bananas by reducing product waste.
- Provide choice in packaging styles
the consumer demands.
- Respond to large bag volume Food Service
and Club Store demand.

Private
label
We are particularly proud of our private label
capabilities. In fact, Turbana is the largest producer
of private label bananas in the US. We have the knowledge,
experience and quality to provide customers with their
own customized private brand, complete with packaging
and labeling.

Product
diversification
At Turbana, our products are our family. And
although bananas are our "firstborn" - the
reason we got into business in the first place - we
have grown in the years since. Now we offer a complete
range of banana relatives, including plantains, manzanos,
reds and baby bananas. Recently, we have added frozen
plantains to offer a convenient meal solution and an
easy new way to discover plantain flavor.
