HOUSING AND COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE
Background: Some Plantain farms didn’t count with the proper facilities for packing the fruit neither with the necessary sanitary conditions nor with the adequate system to recycle materials. Therefore they were not able to meet the requirements to export their fruit.
Project Description: Since 2009 Unibán has helped 250 plantain growers to get the GlobalGap certification by implementing good farming practices and environmental sustainability. Each one of these plantain growers has now their farm equipped with a packing house where the fruit is selected and packed; two warehouses one for storage of raw materials and the other one for cardboard, and a sanitary unit that is a place for the disposal of residues. Fundaunibán provided assistance at four different levels:

  • Social support (through a psychologist who works towards family cohesion)
  • Administrative assistance (to run their business)
  • Infrastructure development (for improvement of facilities)
  • Productivity (with an agronomist for crop management)

Impact: 250 plantain growers now count with new facilities to improve the production process of the fruit. They have benefited from training and assistance to improve the quality of the crop which means an integral development of the farm, fruit and their families. This project has enabled them to gain access to international markets by being more competitive while preserving the environment. Moreover, Fundaunibán and Unibán have brought social and economic stability by improving the quality of life of the plantain farmers.

"I feel privileged for
getting all the benefits of

helped us improve the
working conditions as well
as our farming practices."
