Background: A significant amount of children in Urabá were born with cleft lip and split palate, partly due to malnutrition levels among women and the early ages at which they get pregnant.
Project Description: For the past 8 years Fundaunibán has been providing integrated specialized care for children with cleft lip and split palate, through plastic surgery. The purpose is to help with the physical, physiological and social rehabilitation of the patients, with active participation from their family.
Impact: Fundauniban has built a database of children and teenagers who suffer from cleft lip and split palate deformities. To date, thanks to this program, 776 surgeries have been performed on these children and teens that now have a new life; surgery has not only changed their physical appearance but how they interact with other people.
